Can school hold a conference with a doctor without notifying the parent?

March 8, 2010 - 8:27 am 18 Comments

The child has and IEP and the IEP team held a telephone conference with the doctor without notifying the parent or inviting them. Can they do this?

I totally disagree with the other answerers. Just because the child has an IEP does not necessarily mean this was an IEP meeting, and if the parents already signed consent to exchange information with the doctor, this may be totally legal.

The doctor may have called, requesting info about how the child is behaving/performing in school, or the school may have had a question about how/when medication is to be administered at school, or any number of things that don’t require a full IEP meeting or parent contact.

There is simply not enough information given in the situation to answer. If the parent has a problem with this they should first talk to both the teacher and doctor, and if they are not happy with the answers given they can revoke permission to exchange information.

Too many people are automatically assuming the school did something wrong and people should be fired when this may be a totally lawful and ethical conversation.

The reason we have parents sign for permission to exchange information is so that we can talk to doctors and other people as needed. There is no requirement to let parents know when and how that is going to happen, and there’s not necessarily anything wrong with it.

Suppose this is a case of possible child abuse and the school wants to talk to the doctor before reporting it? Perhaps the doctor asked school personnel to fill out a questionnaire and there were questions about it. These situations do not require parent notificaton of contact.

As for the IEP team talking to the doctor, as a teacher it is not unusual to want someone else on the phone with you so there are witnesses and no misunderstanding as to what was said. It may be as simple as that.

There are too many questions that need to be answered before anyone can comment on the legalities of the situation or call for people to be terminated. Above all else, the parent needs to talk to the teacher and doctor themselves.

Zurich Conference: Brian O’Leary on Free Energy, 12 July

March 7, 2010 - 9:25 pm No Comments

Half way through Brian O’Leary’s presentation on Free Energy on the final afternoon of the Zurich Conference, Henry Deacon – who had been present throughout as an anonymous delegate – asked if he could join Brian to support his testimony on the reality of Free Energy technology.

This video fully captures this surprising (and historic!) moment and Henry, in his very first public appearance, speaking nervously but with great courage, outlines a little of his experience and testifies to the reality of a Free Energy device, based on the Casimir Effect, which he worked with in the 1980s at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and which at that time was accessible in the public domain.

The video continues to the formal end of the Conference. (Enjoy Brian’s wonderful jazz piano…!)

How to make a conference call on Australian Phones?

March 6, 2010 - 5:15 am 1 Comment

OK, well. I’m in a friendship group of six and we all love the advantages of three-way. But when we decide to put another person on the line, it never ever works. I’ve researched it and every method turns out to be a flop. Does anyone out there know how to make a conference call that actually works?
Thanks in advance
holly may, I don’t care if you don’t know. I only care if you DO know. Gosh.

Which conference is stronger this year the Western or the Eastern?

March 2, 2010 - 5:07 am 11 Comments

The Eastern conference has 3 elite teams, and the Western has one. But only 4 teams in the East have a record that would compete for a playoff spot in the west. But the West has more bottom feeders such as Sac, LAC, Memphis, OKC. So they play easier games. Which conference in your opinion is stronger?

The West, I pretty much agree with all the other answers about the west of 50 wins with the Mavs for the 8th seed.

But you got to remember that every time someone in the west play each other from the allstar break till the end of the season…it is almost playoff atmosphere like. Knowing that 1 winning team will not make it to the playoffs…and 1 win or lose can either give you the 2nd seed or 9th and out of the playoffs completely. The West has their level of play alot higher than most of the teams of the east because of this reason.

How can I raise funds to attend an international conference where I am invited to present a workshop?

February 28, 2010 - 6:07 am 1 Comment

I have done considerable teaching of economics in Canada and China. But as a sessional lecturer, I have limited access to university funds. The 13th International Anti-Corruption Conference (November) has asked me to prepare a workshop, on the strength of a paper I wrote on the economics of corruption. Please see my funding appeal at corruptionresearch.net.

If you are invited to present a workshop, why are you not getting paid. If not a salary at least transportation and accommodations.

What teams can you see being added to the Big East football conference in the near future?

February 26, 2010 - 4:07 am 4 Comments

Many think that the Big East conference is going to get bigger. My favorite team is in the Big East, and no other conferences have spots where my team can ever advance to, so is the Big East going to get enough teams to have a Big East championship game? If so, what teams can you see being added?

if the big east was smart they would quickly add TCU, Memphis, Houston, East Carolina or maybe get villanova to move to div 1 like uconn did 10 years ago.

this would help the BE recruiting by expanding into the Texas and western PA talent rich areas. or if the BE wants an existing div 1 team they could look to add Memphis or Central Florida

it would be perfect they divide

Western Div TCU, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, WVU or Pitt, Cincy

Eastern : Uconn, Villanova, ECU, USF, Syracuse, Rutgers, WVU or pitt

WVU and pitt are the best know "traditional" football programs you would not put them in the same divisions in hopes they would be playing in the big east conf championship game in hopes more people would watch

Memphis was almost added the last time the big east expanded and that would make sense on the basketball side memphis could replace Depaul and ECU has close too
