1977 National Women’s Conference Plan of Action success?

March 6, 2010 - 5:15 am 1 Comment

The plan of action adopted at the 1977 National Women’s Conference featured 26 resolutions, or planks, on the following topics:

By a topic by topic breakdown how successful have each of these been?

Arts and humanities: Women should have equal opportunities in federal posts and equal access to arts grants.

Battered women: A national clearinghouse must be created to support local organizations helping battered women and working to prevent domestic violence.

Business: More government contracts to women-owned businesses, which numbered less than one percent in 1977.

Child abuse: More prevention, treatment and protective services.

Child care: Care must be low cost and high quality.

Credit: The Equal Credit Opportunity Act must be enforced to make sure that women are no longer denied credit on the basis of gender.

Disabled women: Equal access to education, training, employment and child custody rights.

Education: More women in leadership positions and in textbooks. Title IX must be enforced.

Elective and appointive office: More representation of women.

Employment: More job opportunities and less discrimination.

Equal Rights Amendment: The ERA must be ratified.

Health: Health insurance benefits must include family planning and other concerns relevant to women.

Homemakers: Must be covered under Social Security and have greater economic security, especially in the event of divorce or the death of a spouse.

Insurance: Eliminate practices that deny women coverage on the basis of gender.

International affairs: Increase the number of women in the departments of state and defense, aid women in developing nations and promote nuclear disarmament.

Media: More women in media jobs, especially in leadership positions.

Minority women: Eliminate discrimination, support affirmative action, guarantee tribal rights and prevent deportation of mothers of American-born children.

Offenders: Improve health services and educational and vocational training.

Older women: Help older women live with dignity.

Rape: Expand the definition of rape to include married men who abuse their wives and reduce legal burdens on victims.

Reproductive freedom: Support Roe v. Wade, promote family planning and allow Medicaid payments for abortion.

Rural women: Create a federal rural education policy and expand ownership rights for farm wives.

Sexual preference: Implement legislation to eliminate discrimination on the basis of sexual preference and repeal state laws restricting private sexual behavior between consenting adults.

Statistics: Federal agencies should collect and analyze data in ways that assess the impact on women.

Women, welfare and poverty: Improve social security and retirement systems, raise minimum wage, provide child care and focus on welfare and poverty as major women’s issues.

Continuing committee of the conference: Create a committee to follow up on recommendations and take steps to convene a Second National Women’s Conference.

Some of it has been achieved. Discrimination in lending has mostly disappeared, the federal government does a lot of gender based analysis, there are laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and Title IX is generally enforced.

But a lot of things haven’t happened.

-The ERA wasn’t passed.
-There are many health plans that cover Viagra (!) but not birth control. Which is frankly, ridiculous since childbirth costs insurance a fortune, but companies have learned they can force women to pay for it.
-Women pay more for health insurance.
-Child care is very expensive in the US and gets less government funding than it does in other Western countries.
-Homemakers do not get social security.
-Rape is rarely prosecuted and even when offenders are convicted, they generally serve less time than small scale drug dealers.
-Roe v Wade has been severely curtailed in the last 30 years.

How do I complain about the church services to the Catholic authority via internet?

March 2, 2010 - 5:07 am 4 Comments

Sorry if my english is bad

I found it hard to believe, but the fathers in my church have gone to a national conference, without announcement before, and now it’s not clear who would guide our Eucharist.

I understand you question. I will keep my English simple. Consider:

1. Did you miss the announcement?
2. Your priest should be at his parish on Sunday unless he has another duty (or is sick). This is not wrong.
3. It is not wrong for a priest to go out of town during the week.
4. The Eucharist is a privilege not a right.
5. If your Mass at your parish is canceled you must go to another parish on Sunday for Mass. If there is no other parish, you do not need to go to Church on Sunday.

What you asked, is not wrong, but is not loving. To complain, do so to your Priest. If that is a problem, talk to your bishop. Listen to and obey your Bishop’s answer!

Email alerts for quarterly and annual conference calls?

February 28, 2010 - 6:07 am 2 Comments

I follow a number of stocks, and I’d like to listen in on their quarterly and annual conference calls as they happen. However, most times I don’t find out about these until after they happen.

Is there any service where I can get email alerts or summaries of upcoming investor conference calls for a specific set of stocks?

I’d like to put in, say, GOOG, AAPL, GS, and HANS, and either a) get an email a day ahead of time or so, or b) a web page I could visit to easily see the times?

I don’t want to have to check all the individual company websites all the time to figure it out.

Thanks!

Most alerts can be set up by the individual companies you are wanting information on.

Could poor airline services be contributing to the USA’s faltering economy?

February 22, 2010 - 5:32 am 3 Comments

Poor airline service (prices, lines, poor service) = less flyers. Business are relying more on phone and online conferences, meaning less business flights. GE, who employs my husband and his father – has cut it’s corporate business flights by 66%, only sending employees by flight when absolutely nessecary.
Many people, myself and family included, are refusing to fly for leisure especially since it’s painful and a hassle to fly anymore.

I’m sure others must feel the same way and are following suit.

So with all this, could the airlines also be a contributing factor to the poor economy? If so, what should be done?

The airlines and FAA have worked hard to get themselves into this mess. It all started after 9/11 when people were not flying, so that airlines cut routes and filled planes to capacity and overbooked as well. Poor customer service was a result of trying to cut costs… and then the spiral down… long security lines, thousands of canceled flights blamed on the FAA and ticketing computers.

The airlines certainly reflect what is going on in the economy, but there are factors too. The global economy is forcing prices down, unions in the US are forcing prices up, and offshore labor is cheap. It is going to take decades for China and India to "catch up" in lifestyle, but their thirst for oil is certainly a sign of the times.

In the end, customer service in any industry is key. Sprint is struggling and for some time they had the worst customer service… it always seems to be a place to cut costs.

I am not all that interested in flying, or driving now due to the gas prices.
