American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) immediate past president Robert E. Sallis, M.D., FACSM, announces a new program developed by the ACSM called Exercise is Medicine™. This program is designed to encourage America’s patients to incorporate physical activity and exercise into their daily routine and calls on doctors to prescribe exercise to their patients. The California Governor’s Council has taken a leadership position with this initiative by signing up thousands of doctors to begin prescribing exercise to their patients.

On Oct. 17-19, hundreds of experts from around the world and Music Row came to Vanderbilt Law School to discuss and debate issues such as how artists, songwriters and authors are paid for use of their work and how to legally distribute music, videos and other works protected by intellectual property as part of a conference sponsored by Vanderbilt, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC).

Vanderbilt professor of law and director of the international legal studies program, Larry Helfer collaborated with music rights organizations BMI, ASCAP and SESAC for the conference.

PANEL DISCUSSION 2. EMERGING NEW SERVICES: THEIR IMPACT ON COLLECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF COPYRIGHT AND RELATED RIGHTS

Issues to discuss: Consumer electronics and rights management: file sharing, MP3, Pod casting, station-ripping, streaming and other digital services; music, video, and TV programs on mobile telephones, such as the UMTS technology. Internet video services – Mobisodes/Websodes. What are the future technological trends and their impact on rights management? Which rights are concerned? Who should license and how? Basis and criteria. Monitoring sales of music on-demand via networks. Are current international norms already obsolete? Multimedia products and clearances of rights. The present situation in the United States of America. Are collective management organizations equipped to respond to new emerging services and ensure distribution of royalties?
